There are lots of places where no matter how hard you tried to take pictures of it, you still couldn’t capture what you saw in person. Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of them.
Before I visited the salt mine, I did not have a high expectation. The reason was that even though I’ve never visited a salt mine, I thought, well it’s just a mine and would probably just like other caves that I’ve visited. I did see good pictures of it but I just did not expect it to be spectacular.
As we went inside the mine, everything was within my expectation. The sculpture and carvings did look impressive and indeed I was surprised that under a salt mine there were so many beautiful art pieces (I was thinking miners’ life was hard and they wouldn’t have lot of time for art). Then, as we moved into this Chapel of St. Kinga, my mouth widened…
The picture I posted here is just the altar and it does not show how big the chapel is. It IS big and full of carefully crafted sculptures. Everything is made of salt and as you can see in the picture, the altar is just like the beautiful ones we can see in many cathedrals in Europe. To be honest, I am still puzzled why people would build such as beautiful chapel in salt mine but no matter what, this is possibly the most beautiful mine I’ve ever seen.
Oh by the way for those who want to have an unforgettable wedding ceremony, you can actually book this chapel for your wedding. Also there are concerts held there from time to time.
