The theme for this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge is “In the Background”. The idea is to make the background of the picture to be the centre of attention instead of the photo subject. This is a very interesting theme because if a background is now the focus, should it be still called a background?
This picture was taken at a large shopping centre at Potstamer Platz in Berlin, Germany. It was near Christmas and there was a very large Christmas market at Potstamer Platz. After walking around for a while in the market, we were frozen by the cold weather and so we went into a shopping centre to seek shelter.
The shopping centre was beautifully decorated and we took a lot of pictures. Then I was near a Christmas tree and saw myself as an reflection in a large golden ornament. I thought it would be a very interesting picture and so I positioned myself at the centre of the ornament with the shops as the background and took a “self portrait”.
Technically the picture isn’t very good. In fact I am quite annoyed by the out of focus Christmas tree branch at the top right corner. To fix it I have added a white vignette to the picture and also soften everything except the two ornaments. I am really surprised with the result as the manipulation made the picture look very Christmas!
