One of the reasons we like Hundertwasser is because he made boring things interesting. Look at this incineration plant in Osaka, Japan. If someone asked me to guess what was this building for, I would probably guess it’s an apartment, or a hotel, or maybe a museum. I can never imagine this is an incineration plant and I don’t think anyone will build an incineration plant like this.
OK, It IS an incineration plant. The Japanese authority explicitly invited Hundertwasser to design it so as to preserve the environment. The Hundertwasser-style exterior and greenery makes it “look” environmental, but actually it IS very environmental. It is well equipped with different anti-pollution system to treat exhaust gas and water. It also converts the generated energy from waste incineration to steam and electricity for its own and outside use.
Apart from this incineration plant, there is another building nearby designed by Hundertwasser. I will have another post about it later on this blog.
