One of the first impressions when we arrived at Valletta, the capital of Malta, was that we were back to the 70’s. The impression came from the buses – all single deck, yellow in colour and most of them looked very old style. Indeed I believe lots of them should have retired long ago. The most interesting thing about them is they all looked different and the only common theme was the yellow colour. At that time, I knew very little about them. Later I found that Malta had a very unique bus ownership system – each bus was owned privately, sometimes by the drivers and they liked to do “customisation” which gave a very different look to each of the buses.
Your won’t see them anymore in Malta because in 2011, the whole bus system was reformed and it is now run by Arriva. I do wonder how they are going to deal with the old fleet. If you know about it, do let me know. Thanks.
