I didn’t know there was a place called Bled in the world until I saw a stunning picture of a small island in a large lake. That picture brought us to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Lake Bled is just about 60km northwest from the capital and we really wanted to know if such beautiful place did exist in the world or it was just a product of Photoshop.
When we arrived at the Lake Bled, we were utterly disappointed. We were not disappointed with the lake itself and in fact, I think no postcard in the world can truly capture the beauty of the lake. The water was so clear, the trees were so green and even though there were tourists, it was quiet because nobody would want to disturb such a serene atmosphere. We were disappointed with the weather. It was cloudy and misty and the sky was depressingly grey. We wouldn’t be able to see the beautiful lake under a bright blue sky as we saw on postcards.
Anyway, we’ve come and we could do nothing about it. We went to the Bled Castle which had a bird’s eye view of the lake. I took some pictures and then when I looked at them, I thought of a consolation to myself – you had never seen a misty and dull Bled Lake in postcards or tourist book. I now have these dull pictures as a proof that I’ve really been there.
